Composting-Why you should
Composting is a simple way to create a substance that adds nutrients and fuels plant growth within our garden. Composting is done using the following steps:
Step 1) Gather compostable items to use.
Step 2) Put your materials into a composting bin.
Step 3) *Optional* If possible, add worms to aid development.
Step 4) *Optional* Put composting bin outside (done for faster compost).
Step 5) let your bin sit for at least six months (make sure to turn bin every week).
There are many materials that can be used to compost. Some of these materials are lettuce, paper napkins, carrots, cabbage, celery, and fruit peels along with many other fruits and vegetables. The one main food group that we will not use though, are meats. *Notice: we will inform you what materials are acceptable during our collection.*
We have designed this presentation to try and encourage kids to help us out with composting at SPMS. No, we are not asking you to do the dirty work! We just want kids to donate some of their leftover lunch so that we can make it ourselves. All you guys need to do is donate a little each day so that our garden could become much healthier and stronger.
Here’s why: PRIZES!
If SPMS sixth grade reaches a certain amount of compost before June 5 every student will receive…
Doughnut Day!!!!
Thank you for bearing with us so far! We just have a few final notes we would like to discuss:
-First off, don’t stress about about remembering what food items go into the bin (that is the helper’s job) and don’t be discouraged by this either. We would definitely rather you see if we can use it then if you don’t try at all.
